Chapter 14

It was the middle of October when the paintings finally arrived. As efficient as ever, Mr. Hughes, had them set up in the ballroom. He found Jade in the parlor. “Miss Stanfield, the room is ready for viewing. Shall I inform the family?”

Jade looked up from her book. The timing was perfect, as everyone was in the castle, but she was a bundle of nerves. “I’d like to see everything first.”

“Of course,” he said, following her back to the ballroom.

Jade walked around the room with a critical eye. She’d had sent over a variety of paintings to hopefully appeal to everyone. “Do you have a favorite, Mr. Hughes?”

“Miss Stanfield, you are a very talented painter, and I couldn’t possibly choose only one.”

“Very diplomatic answer.”

Mr. Hughes bowed. “Shall I inform the family?”

Jade nodded. “Might as well. Either they’re going to like them or not.”

It wasn’t long before Cade and Keira arrived, followed shortly by Elizabeth and Jack. “Come in,” Jade said.

Mr. Hughes stood by the door. “Will there be anything else, Miss Stanfield?”

“Do you know where Edward is?”

“I believe he’s in his office. I shall inform him you wish his presence in the ballroom.”

“Thank you, Mr. Hughes.”

While she waited for Edward to arrive, she was on pins and needles for the first opinions.

“Jade, these are stunning,” Cade said as he walked around the room.

“I agree,” Keira said. “It’ll be hard to choose which one I want to hang in my office.”

Mr. Hughes soon returned with Edward in tow, and Jade held her breath. Would he like her work? The only artwork of hers that he’d seen was the wedding arch, and while he’d complimented her, he said it wasn’t something he’d choose.

Everyone had nothing but glowing compliments for her work. Everyone except Edward. He stood in front of the first painting, which she’d completed a few years ago when she was feeling especially angry at the world. It was one of the low points in her life, when she felt that she would never be good enough—not a good enough artist, not a good enough girlfriend, just not good enough at anything. The angry sea had flowed from her fingers without much thought; her anger drove her hand to complete roiling waves and flashes of lightning as the waves pounded against the rocky shore. A lighthouse flashed a weak light into the darkness, trying to warn any ships away from the rocks. It was a dark piece, but at the time it hadn’t soothed her soul, or assuaged her feelings, not one bit. She’d stopped painting for a long while after that.

Jade walked over to where Edward stood for ages staring at the painting. “You seem to be studying this painting more than any of the others.”

Edward didn’t look at her. “There are other paintings?”

Jade chuckled. “There’s a whole roomful. Everyone is welcome to take one and after they choose, Cade has graciously said some of the paintings can be hung around the castle as well as in the studio. Perhaps you’d like to see what else I had shipped over.
